I use it for (part of) the backup of my nas. Those offerings are often S3 compatible object storage solutions, that they offer their own backup tool for or that easily integrates into 3rd party tools supporting this provider specifically. This makes you consider what and how much you like to backup to the cloud but it is more likely to stay just as it is. So the more you occupy, the more you pay. Hence myself I use $/GB/month subscriptions that these services offer (in my case Backblaze). The fine print if many such prividers, state to being able to change the rules in that regard.
So once such a service would have enough marketshare or when too many users have too much data, costs are expected to increase or limit the amount of data once fair use starts kicking in. Encryption might even make deduplication less likely to be optimal, to be able to go over boundaries of single users data.ītw they have an even more extensive list: This only works if not too many customers do this.Even with all deduplication possible in service end, this cannot scale up indefinitely as the data still will need to land on disk, which comes at a certain $/GB price. Myself I don't believe unlimited is a sustainable business model when foraging into multi TB sizes.
